There are plenty of reasons to visit Peru: to explore ancient at Machu Piccu, spot some of the world’s rarest birds, or trek some of Earth’s deepest canyons. Yet, once you are on the ground an hungry, you may find those experience mere appetizers to the main event: food. From the rain forests of the northeast to the arid high plateau that runs like a spine through the south, Peru is blessed with incredible biodiversity a bounty that is clearly reflected on its plates.

In cities and villages, seafood markets overflow with fresh fish and shellfish, and produce stalls are piled high with native delicacies like lucuma (a subtropical fruit the color and consistency of yam) and huacatay (an Andean black mint) as well as staples like aji (hot papper) and papas (potatoes), in a kaleidoscope of color and shapes. (really over 4000 varieties of potato are grown in Peru alone)

The result is a bright, piquant cuisine that draws upon not only native Quechua culture but also almost 500 years of Spanish, African, Chinese, and Japanese immigration. Those influences shine in many of Peru’s most iconic dishes like lomo saltado ( a stir fry of beef or sometimes alpaca and onions, peppers and rice), causas ( mashed potato dumplings seved with various toppings such as hard boiled eggs) and most notably service. Peruvians have long been vocally (and justifiably) proud of their homeland’s cooking, but suddenly, the rest of the world seems to be taking note too.

In 2008, the country’s leading chef, Gaston Acurio, founded Mistura, a Lima based food festival that has since become the leading annual culinary event in south Americs. Indeed, when this years festival took place in Spetember, dozens of the globe’s most respected chefs including Rene Redzepi and Dan Barber were in attendance eager to learn and of couse to eat.

Have you ever reached a point in your life where you absolutely need a large amount of cash and you’ve exhausted every available option? You’ve tried to borrow from family, use credit cards, and even sell a few possessions, but you’re still coming up short – that’s when you know it’s time for a payday loan. A payday loan is a great resource in times of need, but should really only be used in the worst-case scenario. Sure, you may be tempted to take out a small payday loan so you can do some shopping over the weekend or purchase a big-ticket item, but that typically leads down the path to debt.

If you’re not financially responsible, taking out multiple payday loans can eventually cost you a lot of money. Some people find themselves overwhelmed by payday loan or title loan debt, but you can avoid that by only borrowing what’s necessary and having a plan to pay it back. Here are some common situations where a payday loan might be useful as the worst-case scenario. Let’s say you’re already a day late on rent or a couple’s day without your medication and you don’t receive your paycheck for five more days.

Depending on your landlord’s policies or your health depend on that medication, you could get charged late fees for every single day you’re late. That could easily add up to over $100 in late fee charges, so it makes to sense to avoid them with a payday loan. The interest on a payday loan will almost certainly be less than the late fees and you won’t be marked with a late payment. At some point in everyone’s life there car breaks down. You take it to a mechanic and find out the repairs will cost you over $400. Like most people you don’t have that kind of cash lying around and you’ve maxed out your credit cards.

To make matters worse, you need your car to get to and from work or school, so those repairs need to get finished quickly. It really is the worst-case scenario and that’s what payday loans are meant for. Another common problem that tends to sneak up on people are hospital or doctor visits. You can never predict when you’ll get sick or injured, but you can’t let money get in the way of your health no matter what the cost. Even with a decent health insurance plan, a trip to the hospital can cost upwards of a $1,000 and while some hospitals may be willing to work out a payment plan, others aren’t so generous. A payday loan gives you the flexibility you need in this difficult scenario.

While the technique behind the fabric art of batik may be basic, the intricate results are anything but. Add the vibrant palette of the Caribbean, and the finished product is not merely beautiful – it truly captures the spirit of the region.

Which makes it entirely fitting that Caribelle Batik, a studio / shop special izing in handcrafted batik items, is located in a quintessentially Kittitian setting: a 17th-century former sugar plantation called Romney Manor. Once owned by Sam Jefferson (the great-great-great-grandfather of Thomas), the estate, whith lush grounds and gardens, is an ideal backdrop for the comapany’s workshop, where visitor can look an as batik artisans painstalkingly engage in the delicate process.

Batik originated as an art from in Indonesia thousands of year ago, but the practice has change little in its migration across the millennia and the glodbe. A design is applied to cotton fabric in wax using a special tool, and the the piece is immersed in dye. The waxeb porion of the fabric doesn’t absorb the color, resulting in a reversedyed image that, because it,s applied by hand, is always unique. The item is then boiled, which removes the wax, and hung to dry. The entire process, which can take anywhere from three days to more than a week, is repeated an necessary until the desired range of pattern and color is achieved.

There are differences between the typically Caribbean style of batik and that of its Pacific ancestor. Caribelle’s founder, English transplant Maurice Widdowson, draws the distinction: “Our artisans use bold colors, unlike in traditional Indonesian batik, where they tend to be more muted.” Indeed, the finished products boast a range of hues convering spectrum, from reds and pink to shades of orange, green and blue. The effect clearly reveals the inspiration of the island’s riotous profusion of colors.

That blend of setting and aesthetic is even reflected in the company’s identity. As Maurice points out, “Our name Caribelle, evokes boths the Caribbean and beauty, as belle is French for beautiful.” And like the name, “Caribelle’s product have a distinct flavor all their own.

“I think what is most special about us is that we offer such unique products is such a tranquil setting,” says manager Jamilia Samuel-Brazier. Another factor that sets Carobelle apart is the tellent and experience of its Kittitian artisans, some of whom have been with the company almost since its 1976 founding. Watching as they go about crafting each fichly detailed piece is rewarding experience, one matched only by choosing which piece of batik of the Caribbean, really you want to take home.
